Study in Russia

The Russian higher medical Universities & Engineering Universities are some of the best in the world. Russia has always been ahead in the field of education and more specifically medicine, engineering and other fields. Studying in Russia is easy, cheap, and flexible. It's also an inexpensive way for travellers to engage in the cultural life of Russia's cities. Russia has a long-standing tradition in high-quality education for all citizens. It probably has also one of the best education systems in the world producing a literacy rate of 98%. There are 609 state and 206 private accredited higher education institutions in Russia; the Ministry of Education finances 315 of them (state). Other Ministries or the local authorities finance the rest of the programmes.

Higher education system

Russia's participation in creating the Joint European Area of Higher Education facilitates the mutual recognition of the Russian degrees in the Europe and vice versa. Russia’s adherence to the Bologna process has facilitated the recognition of the Russian degrees all over the world via the legalization of the degrees. State and private accredited institutions (universitites, academies, institutes, etc) provide higher education study programmes. Education in state universities is not often free of charge - mostly for those students who show higher results at entrance exams. Approximately one-third of the students pay tuition fees. In private higher education institutions, all students have to pay for tuition. Russian State Universities has a special unit, The Institute of International Education (IIE), which provides training for international students and promotes a wide spectrum of educational programs.

Academic study programmes

The system of education in Russia has considerably changed over the past five years. Universities have begun implementing a system similar to that of Britain and the USA: 4 years for a Bachelor's degree and 2 years for a Master's degree. These changes are still in progress; some universities offer the new system, others still work according to the prior 5-year system. After completing higher education, one can pursue postgraduate studies (aspirantura in Russian), which takes three years. After the defence of the thesis, 'Candidate of Science' (or Kandidat nauk) degree is awarded. This is considered equivalent to the Ph.D. degree according to the American system. There is one more scientific-degree in Russia higher than 'Candidate of Science'. It is the 'Doctor of Science' (or Doktor nauk) degree. This postdoctoral education, known as doctorantura in Russian, takes three more years. The 'Doctor of Science' degree is awarded after defending the doctoral thesis. In Russia, the duration of studies at the faculty of medicine or engineering depends upon the medium of instruction. The faculty with Russian language as the medium of instruction offers a study-program of seven years or five years in case of engineering, which includes one year training in Russian, at the preparatory faculty. Students who opt for English as the language of instruction do not have to undergo the one-year training at a preparatory faculty.
